Listening Skills

Whether you are taking 2 skills test or a 4 skills SELT exam, there will be a listening section
in your test. It is, therefore, important that you are able to listen for a variety of information
such as:

  • specific detail (i.e., someone’s age)
  • an opinion
  • attitude
  • the relationship between people (i.e., work colleague or husband)
  • topic
  • gist

Grammar Boost*

Although not tested directly, your grammar will be considered in the speaking sections of
the SELT exam. If your grammar level is below the required level for your SELT exam, we
may include some extra grammar practice in your course. This usually includes:

  • review of grammar tenses: past, present and future forms
  • nouns and articles
  • prepositions: of movement, of time, of place and common prepositional phrases
  • common adjectives and adverbs
  • simple conditionals

vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation will be assessed as Speaking Skills

Speaking Skills*

Whether you are taking 2 skills test or a 4 skills SELT exam, there will be a speaking section
in your test. It is, therefore, important that you are able to express yourself in a number of
ways when you are:

  • giving information about yourself
  • speaking and responding to general questions (2 skills exams)
  • speaking and responding to different situations that may occur in your daily life (4 skills
    exam)
  • discussing and expressing your opinion
  • managing and contributing to a discussion
  • explaining and justifying yourself
  • agreeing and disagreeing

vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation will be assessed as Speaking Skills.

Online Folder

All material used in your course is kept in your own private online folder which is stored on the SELT Central cloud. You have access to the cloud from your computer or smartphone. You can either download your files or view them on your device. This means you can review your class, and class materials wherever you are. Class materials will include:

  • audio from the listening exercises
  • PDFs and word documents
  • video files
  • recordings of your class

Pronunciation*

Although not tested directly, your pronunciation will be considered in the speaking sections of the SELT exam. If your pronunciation makes it difficult for the listener to understand or follow what you are saying, we may include some extra pronunciation practice in your course. This usually includes:

  • understanding how sounds are produced
  • emphasising vowel sounds and consonant sounds
  • stressing the right syllable in verbs, adjectives, adverbs and nouns
  • word stress in sentences
  • stress patterns
  • stress patterns in speech units
  • intonation

Vocabulary Boost

Although not tested directly, your vocabulary will be considered in the speaking and writing sections of the SELT exam. If your vocabulary is below the required level for your SELT exam, we may include some extra vocabulary exercises in your course. This usually includes common everyday vocabulary covering:

  • the world around us
  • people
  • daily life
  • work and business
  • leisure and entertainment
  • social issues
  • functional language
  • academic vocabulary (IELTS UKVI)
You will have taken a grammar and vocabulary test, and your course will address the areas that you didn’t do so well on. Your teacher will also make sure that you are familiar with other grammar areas relevant to your level. You may be given homework to complete to help you build your skills. Homework is usually given when the task doesn’t need a teacher present and will mainly be vocabulary, grammar and listening tasks.
Usually, by class four, you’re ready for the second practice test. Again, the results and feedback will be discussed with you, and any problems can be addressed in the following classes
Should you need any extra classes or would like to take an elective (a 5-class course consisting of English language areas of your choice), these are available at a discounted rate.
All classes are private, but you may be offered discounted group classes if everyone in your group takes the same SELT test and is at the same level
Classes are 90-minutes long, and you will arrange with your teacher the best schedule. Classes are held on the Zoom platform and recorded for you to review. You will have an online folder that will contain all your lessons and video/audio recordings which you can listen to, or watch again through your phone or computer. All your class files can be downloaded at any time.
